High Royds Sports Association volunteers are praised for sporting endeavours

Volunteers who are working to provide top-class sporting facilities in Menston have been praised in Parliament by an MP.

Pudsey MP Stuart Andrew highlighted the work of the High Royds Sport Association which is aiming to create a sports park for Aireborough, taking in facilities at High Royds and St Mary’s School.

Mr Andrew, who is supporting the scheme, praised it in Parliament and paid tribute to the role played by voluntary sports groups.

The MP also questioned what was being done to improve disabled access to sport.

He said: “Voluntary sports groups in my constituency have worked for a number of years with local special schools to provide coaching for disabled children. They are now working with sports colleges, developers and councillors to create a new sports park to increase and improve access for all.”

Culture Secretary Maria Miller MP agreed with Mr. Andrew’s sentiments and assured him that the Department for Culture, Media and Sport would do all it could to support such work.

Mr Andrew said: “I was pleased that the Secretary of State agreed with me and joined me in paying tribute to the hard working sports volunteers in my constituency. Committed volunteers are essential to assure local sports groups and clubs continue to thrive and they work tirelessly to serve the local community. I believe that the proposed developments at High Royds will provide much needed, top class sporting facilities for local residents. I look forward to working with the Department for Culture, Media and Sport to continue to improve access to sport for everyone.”   Two unused football pitches and a cricket pitch at High Royds have been reseeded and prepared for use by the developers. Volunteers are now trying to raise money to further the scheme, and are hoping to provide a clubhouse – although it is being stressed that this will not happen without consultation with residents.
