Wharfedale Lions in pledge to raise cash for Marie Curie fund
9:00am Friday 4th January 2013 in Local news
Wharfedale and Aireborough’s Lions Clubs have pledged their long-term support for a cancer charity’s biggest fundraising event.
All of West Yorkshire’s Lions groups will be helping Marie Curie Cancer Care run its Great Daffodil Appeal for the next three years.
The agreement means branches like Otley Lions and Guiseley & District Lions will be collecting donations and encouraging people to wear the charity's daffodil pin each March.
Every £20 raised from the appeal helps fund an hour of Marie Curie nursing care, which is provided free to people with terminal cancer, and other illnesses, in their own homes.
Community fund-raiser at Marie Curie Cancer Care, Claire Priestwood, said: “We are very excited to have support from our local Lions Clubs.
“As an organisation that works to serve the community, we’re confident they will help make this year’s Great Daffodil Appeal the best yet.
“However, we still need many more volunteers in West Yorkshire, so please get in touch if you have an hour to spare in March.
“Just one or two hours of your time will help Marie Curie nurse more local people with terminal illness.”
Chairman of the Lions Clubs of the British Isles and Ireland, Martin Morgan, said: “Caring for local communities is the essence of what Lions Clubs are about, so this partnership with Marie Curie is the perfect match.
“We are looking forward to collecting donations for the Great Daffodil Appeal in West Yorkshire, and are proud that the funds we raise will support local people with a terminal illness.”
