Ben Rhydding hockey team’s 10k pledge to raise money in little Edward’s name
Ben Rhydding Hockey Club is set to take part in the Bradford City Run to raise cash for a charity close to their hearts.
They will be wearing their full kit to take part in the 10k event which starts at 10am in City Park, Bradford, on Sunday.
The ten-strong team includes 33-year-old teacher Sarah Clarke, of Guiseley, whose two-year-old son Edward is being treated for leukaemia at Leeds General Infirmary.
He was diagnosed in August following three bouts of tonsilitis and is now on a three-year treatment plan.
At the moment this means going for chemotherapy twice a week as an outpatient, but the next stage of treatment could include having to stay in hospital a bit more.During this treatment, Edward and his family including dad Andrew, 38, and five-year-old Oliver, of Guiseley, have been given help and support from the childhood cancer charity Candlelighters, and this is the charity which the hockey team, will be raising money for.
Sarah, a PE teacher at Grange Technology College in Bradford, said: “The hospital has been fantastic and Candlighters help to support you in as many ways as they can. We are just so grateful to them.”
This support includes members of the play team coming to visit Edward during hospital stays, bringing toys and doing all the activities he would normally do if he was in nursery.
The charity also provides equipment for the rooms, such as TVs, DVDs and Playstations.
Edward’s dad Andrew and uncle Samuel Male have raised £1,000 for Candlelighters by having their heads shaved and Yeadon football team which Andrew plays for have raised a further £1,500.
A fundraising evening, with all proceeds to Candle-lighters, has been organised for Friday, December 28, from 6pm, in the White Swan pub in Yeadon, where there will be a band, food and drinks.
