MPs back region's children's heart surgery unit

MPs spoke passionately in favour of retaining the child-ren’s heart surgery unit at Leeds General Infirmary dur-ing a Parliamentary debate this week.
Local members voiced their support in the House of Com-mons on Tuesday for a camp-aign opposing closure.
The debate came a week after the Secretary of State for Health, Jeremy Hunt, asked an independent panel to carry out a review into the decision.
Conservative MP Philip Davies (above), whose constit-uency covers Menston and Burley, said: “People in York-shire have confidence in the unit, want it to continue and believe it will offer the best possible treatment. Should that not be the most impor-tant factors the Government bears in mind?”
Conservative MP Stuart Andrew, who represents Aireborough and Horsforth, said: “My grave concern is the review will fail to meet the objectives, particularly in the North of England, subjecting my constituents to a worse service than they currently enjoy.”
The review will conclude in February.
