Memory of Addingham man Sid Rayner inspires climb charity venture

Both the cousin and girlfriend of Addingham man Sid Rayner are to tackle a charity climb at the Cow and Calf Rocks in his memory.

Kerry Dawson, 22, and Samantha Treize, 42, are seeking some climbing tips from Mr Rayner’s friends as they prepare for the challenge at the Ilkley landmark on November 11.

Low Mill Fold resident, Mr Rayner, 36, an experienced climber, was tragically killed in a motorbike accident in Kazakhstan in July while on a long distance ride to Mongolia.

He had been riding solo to raise money for the Children and Young People’s Protection and Development non-governmental organisation in Mongolia. The organisation aims to protect the rights of vulnerable children in the country, supporting their education, training and development.

Friends and family are continuing to invite people to donate to the cause in memory of Mr Rayner, and the Cow and Calf climb, between noon and 4pm, will raise money for the cause and serve as a tribute to him.

Miss Dawson, of Leeds, who is Mr Rayner’s cousin, says she has never climbed before, and is counting on some help from Mr Rayner’s friends.

She added: “We’ve got all Sid’s friends coming along to help us. We’re going to climb up, and people are getting together to remember Sid.”

Mr Rayner’s girlfriend, Samantha, went on climbs with him in the past, and has visited a climbing wall to get some practice in.

Mr Rayner was well-known by members of the local climbing community. He climbed in Ilkley, but also tackled tough ascents, including ice climbing in Scotland. He worked as a rope access technician.

He also enjoyed caving, and was a member of Ilkley Constitutional Club.

Posters promoting the event have been put up at various venues, but Miss Dawson urged anyone interested in contributing to the cause to get in touch.
