Two striking versions of Sleeping Beauty – one featuring ballet pumps, the other ice skates – are coming to Bradford’s Alhambra theatre.

The first version, coming to Bradford next spring, is by the UK’s biggest choreographer, Matthew Bourne, whose credits include West End productions of Oliver! and Mary Poppins.

Mr Bourne’s company, New Adventures, celebrates its 25th anniversary with the world premiere of his re-imagining of ballet classic Sleeping Beauty.

It sees him return to the music of Tchaikovsky, completing his trio of ballet masterworks that include Nutcracker! and international smash hit Swan Lake, featuring an all-male swan ensemble.

This version of Sleeping Beauty begins in 1890 at the christening of Princess Aurora, a time when fairies and vampires fed the gothic imagination, before moving forward to the modern day. The haunting new production is described as both a gothic romance and a supernatural love story.

New Adventures productions have proved a hit with Alhambra audiences over the years, drawing in significant regional audiences. The shows include a sexy re-working of Bizet's Carmen into a Fifties American thriller, a haunting contemporary fable twist on Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, a wartime romance version of Cinderella, and an Edward Scissorhands dance show for family audiences.

In 1995 Mr Bourne took the theatre world by storm, transforming Swan Lake into a witty tale about a prince falling for a bare-chested male swan in feather britches. Hailed a theatrical landmark, it became the longest-running ballet in the West End and Broadway.

Also working their magic on Sleeping Beauty are the Imperial Ice Stars, the world’s leading performers of theatrical ice dance. The Alhambra stage will be transformed into a shimmering ice rink for the show, also set to the magnificent music of Tchaikovsky.

Sleeping Beauty on Ice tells the fairytale through world-class skating, breathtaking high-speed lifts and aerial gymnastics, stilt skating and fire effects. The production features a 26-strong cast of Olympic and World Championship skaters.

Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty runs at the Alhambra from March 26-30, 2013.

Sleeping Beauty on Ice runs from June 4-8, 2013.

Tickets for both productions are on (01274) 432000.
