October is breast cancer awareness month and Cancer Support Bradford and Airedale yesterday launched its In the Pink campaign to raise awareness and much-needed funds for the charity.

Although the charity supports more than 3,500 people affected by all cancers each year, this campaign is particularly associated with Breast Cancer Awareness month.

Last year in Bradford and Airedale 5,500 symptomatic patients attended breast screening clinics and every one of them worried about a cancer diagnosis.

Out of these, 415 were diagnosed with cancer and Cancer Support Bradford and Airedale was able to offer support at the point of diagnosis and support them through their journey.

Rick Linforth, consultant breast surgeon at Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Eighty per cent of patients diagnosed will now live over ten years and many survive 20 years and more.

“This is due to earlier detection, better treatments and charities like Cancer Support Bradford and Airedale giving patients the right support at the right time for them.”

The charity is now calling on the whole community to get involved with its In the Pink campaign.

Community fundraiser Linda Enderby said: “We are hoping that lots of people will get involved by holding an event which includes something pink – be it to wear, eat, drink or raffle. No event will be too small – every penny counts and will go to help someone local who is affected by cancer.”

Farnell Land Rover Bradford supported the launch with the loan of a pink Land Rover Evoque, believed to be the only pink version in the world. The company has also donated some of the road driving experiences that will be up for grabs at the charity’s Ladies Pink Lunch on Saturday, October 27.

Sarah Firth, who works at the charity, has set herself a challenge to have her photo taken ‘In The Pink’ in a public place on ten or more days in October.
