CASAC finds way to boost anti-crime door security

A crime prevention group believes it has found a breakthrough solution to cut the level of attempted burglaries in Aireborough and Wharfedale.
CASAC, a not-for-profit, police-endorsed organisation, has for several years been helping residents better secure their homes – while highlighting the weakness of some euro-profile cylinder locks that are targeted by burglars.
Although increasing numbers of householders have been upgrading their euro locks to address the problem, that has not stopped would-be intruders from continuing to try to snap them, so adding to West Yorkshire's unenviable burglary statistics.
But CASAC (Community Action and Support Against Crime) has now developed a technique to remove euro cylinders altogether from existing doors and replace with a mortice-type system which provides a visual deterrent, as well as security.
Chief executive Neil Goldrup said: “The new lock, the Vectis, has always been an excellent product to discourage lock-snapping attempts but no organisation has been able to fit it to existing uPVC or composite doors, only if they are installed as new.
“We have found a technique that will allow us to fit the Vectis to most doors, reducing lock-snapping attempts significantly while enhancing door security.”
West Yorkshire Police works with CASAC, which supports Neighbourhood Watch in the region and only uses police- vetted tradesmen, as one of its community partners.
