One of the torchbearers who carried the Olympic flame through the streets of Ilkley was a special guest at Churches Together in Ilkley’s Holiday Club this week.

Margaret Cook, 74, brought her golden torch along to St Margaret’s Church in Queen’s Road on Monday. The holiday club, for primary school-age children, is celebrating Olympic themes this year.

More than 60 children have attended the club, which is run by volunteers from churches in Ilkley, Burley and Menston.

Organiser, Ruth Jones, said: “The children have all enjoyed watching the Olympic Games, and now have a chance to participate in sports and learn about being a team player and working together for Jesus.

“The volunteers are all enjoying themselves, too, and have transfor-med St Margaret’s Church into an international venue, with bunting, flags and memorabilia from across the world.

“The Olympics in London were made special by the volunteers who helped, and we see this volun-teering spirit in Ilkley all the time. This holiday club has been running for 30 years, and is supported almost entirely by volunteers.”

In addition to the regular Holiday Club, members of Christchurch have run a carers and toddlers group every morning so younger family members can enjoy playing with toys and parents can meet up with friends for a drink and a chat.
