Writer Mary Thomson and actress Cathy Sara will team up as mother and daughter to give readings on A Kindness Of Women as part of the Ilkley Literature Festival Fringe.

The duo will give readings from Mary’s latest pamphlet, interspersed with dramatised readings from writing on similar themes, from Margaret Attwood to Bridget Jones.

The poems and readings reflect on the way that women value friendship, jam-making and motherhood as much as success in any public field. Memories of girlhood and important female friendships and women in art and history have also inspired the writer.

The event will take place at Ilkley Playhouse’s Wildman Theatre on Sunday, October 9.

A former Ilkley Grammar School pupil, Cathy Sara began acting on the Ilkley Playhouse stage at the age of nine.

Her most recent credits include ITV’s Downton Abbey, and the soon-to-be-released film The Woman In Black, starring Daniel Radcliffe.

Mary Thomsom ran the Hawksworth Gallery, as Mary Sara, and was well known in Yorkshire as an art critic and writer before she moved to Scotland in 2006. Since then she has published and hand made several collections of poems and miniature books, exhibiting them at the Scottish Poetry Library and the National Library of Scotland.

She has been invited to read at many venues including art galleries and festivals.
