Planning on going to the pub this weekend? Before you do, come and see Mikron Theatre’s Beer Street here at Otley Courthouse on Saturday.

Mikron Theatre are a unique company in Britain, touring in the summer on a narrowboat (called Tyseley). Now it’s autumn, they’ll be coming to us by road, to bring us Beer Street – a celebration of pubs and beer in British society.

This is Mikron’s 40th anniversary, and they estimate that they’ve now performed more than 4000 times, so it’s bound to be a good show. It’s also the 40th anniversary of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) so it’s a great time to celebrate both the campaign and Mikron Theatre’s talents.

Mikron are consummate musicians too, so their play is full of original songs. In fact, they estimate that over 40 years, they’ve composed and written more than 270 songs. Not all of them will be in Beer Street, though.

After that, you can join us next Friday, for the first in our rock gig series, Courthouse Rocks. Headlining this month are Mancunian indie rockers The Janice Graham Band, supported by Sharp Darts and South View Juniors.

We’ve also got some fantastic folk music coming up on Saturday, October 1, when Chris Newman and his trio are here – he last played at the Courthouse with harpist Maire Ni Chathasaigh, and anyone who came to that will know what a pleasure it is to watch Chris perform. This time will definitely be a real musical sensation, with impressive solos on the mandolin, guitar and bass, and a range of styles from English, Scottish and Irish to Swedish, American and Quebecois.
