He may have missed out on a royal romance, but a singing student has helped create a fitting present to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Mark Gregory, from Addingham, is a member of a capella group The Other Guys, based at the University of St Andrews – the alma mater of Prince William and Princess Kate.

The group hit the headlines earlier this year when their humourous song Royal Romance, which suggested Kate get rid of William, had more than half a million hits on YouTube.

Now the group has released an album, Barely Regal, with profits from its sale going to a charity scholarship set up at the university in the royal couple’s honour.

Mr Gregory, 20, is one of 11 members of The Other Guys and has helped create the new album, which includes remakes of tracks by Katy Perry, Coldplay and Lady Gaga.

The former Addingham Primary and Ermysted’s Grammar School pupil, who is studying German and Russian at the university, was a member of the Addingham Pantomime Group for 11 years, before heading to Scotland.

He joined the Other Guys last year and now the group is hoping for big things from their latest album.

The scholarship has a value of up to £70,000 and will provide for a full St Andrews undergraduate education for a student, from anywhere in the world, who would not otherwise have been able to attend.

Professor Louise Richardson, principal of the university, said: “The energy creativity and raw talent of The Other Guys, combined with their professionalism and sense of fun, mark them as a group of which the university can feel proud. We hope the album will raise money for the scholarship.”
