A narrow residential road used as a rat run by commuters will be made safer by a series of speed humps, a councillor has claimed.

Plans have been drawn up by Bradford Council to install eight road humps on West Chevin Road and Buckle Lane between Otley and Menston near to the Viewlands estate.

Residents now have until noon on Friday, October 7, to put forward their views on the plans for the new safety measures.

But district councillor Matt Palmer, who represents the Wharfedale ward on the council, says it is about time the measures were put in place after a series of delays during the past few years.

“Councillors and residents living on the Viewlands estate have long been campaigning for improved road safety on this very dangerous stretch of road,” coun Palmer said.

“It is used as a rat run by commuters and traffic between Otley and Menston but despite being a residential area it has speeds regularly in excess of 60mph.

“It is high time this happened and I am only sorry that as a result of bureaucratic delays, it has taken so long to deliver.”

Coun Palmer said some sections of the road was known as ‘wingmirror graveyard’ due to its narrowness and the number of mirrors knocked off cars.

“Combined with narrow pavements and a narrow road, this has been a real hazard for some time – residents refer to part of it as ‘wingmirror graveyard’,” he said.

“Councillors have been working towards this for some years and I hope it now goes ahead without further delay.”

Drawings of the planned sites for the humps can be found at City Hall, Shipley and Ilkley town halls and Menston Library.

Objections to the plans must be submitted in writing to Suzan Hemingway, city solicitor, at City Hall in Bradford.
