Burley and Woodhead Primary School children created a colourful reel of bunting to raise funds for their church spire.

Pupils paid £2 to decorate triangles of cloth, which have been strung together and will be used in celebrations for years to come.

The children, who put photographs of themselves on the bunting, have so far raised £200 towards the St Mary’s Church Save our Spire campaign, which is nearing its £30,000 target.

Built in 1843, the metal core of the spire has corroded, so the structure needs to be rebuilt.

Headteacher Jane Speight said: “We thought that the bunting idea was perfect.

“Not only can the children get creative, but they are leaving their own mark on something the school will bring out for fêtes, open days and any other special event we are holding.”

The Reverend Michael Burley, of St Mary’s church, said: “I think it’s wonderful that the children at Burley and Woodhead have thought of such a great way to help us save our spire.

“Great thanks must go to the whole community.”
