Friends of Ben Smithson are preparing to take to the stage this weekend to support fundraising efforts to aid his rehabilitation.

Children from across Yorkshire, including All Saints’ Primary School which Ben attends, will take part in The Big Gig at the King’s Hall in Ilkley.

Nine-year-old Ben, who has cerebral palsy, is recovering from life-changing surgery in America to help him to walk.

Supporters raised more than £45,000 to pay for the operation but there are still costs for physical therapy and follow-up treatment.

All the students involved have taken part in programmes run by Learn to Rock, a music education company based at Dixon’s City Academy in Bradford. Among the performers will be nine-year-old Jack Hendy, a talented drummer who goes to school with Ben.

Jack’s father, Chris Hendy, said they were determined to fill the hall to show their support for Ben.

“At the same time, we are trying to encourage kids from Ilkley and the surrounding area to come and learn an instrument,” he added.

The concert takes place at 7.30pm on Saturday. Tickets cost from £5 and will be available on the door or can be booked by calling Easy Location Letting agency in Otley on 01943 464001.
