More public responses to a police survey are needed if a no cold-calling zone is to be set up in Ilkley, the area’s police inspector says.
Police and trading standards officials are consulting people in the Grove Park area about setting up a zone covering 15 streets.
The exclusion zone would see participating residents given signs and window stickers to display, warning cold callers not to approach their homes.
The scheme, which could be funded under the Proceeds of Crime Act, was suggested in response to numerous complaints about door-to-door canvassers in some parts of Ilkley.
Inspector Sue Sanderson said about half of the Grove Park estate residents consulted had replied to consultations, but there needed to be a 75 to 80 per cent response rate before an exclusion zone could formally be established.
Insp Sanderson said: “We’re trying to encourage residents of Grove Park Estate to reply to us and tell us whether or not they do want us to go ahead.”
She added that a no cold-calling zone would not affect churches or public services.
Residents can respond by calling Ilkley Police on 01274 475301 or by emailing hanpt1@westyorkshire.pnn.police.uk.
