Ben Rhydding couple go the whole hog to help Street Angels

A couple held a hog roast in their garden to raise cash for a project that works to make Bradford city centre a safer place.

David Brown and his wife, of Ben Rhydding, organised the fundraising event in aid of the Bradford Street Angels, in response to the murders of three prostitutes in the city.

The Bradford Street Angels, a church project in Bradford, enlists the help of volunteers to run patrols in the city centre on Friday and Saturday nights.

The Street Angels patrol in radio-linked teams, approaching vulnerable people and those who may have had too much to drink.

Since the Street Angels began their patrols, violent crime in the city is said to have fallen by 22 per cent.

A similar scheme operates in Halifax, where police say violent crime in the town centre has dropped by 42 per cent.

The Browns raised £250 for the project at their hog roast.

A group of friends entertained guests with a tombola and games, and the centrepiece of the event was the spit-roasted pig, which had been reared in Fewston.

Local businesses donated prizes and the Ilkley Brewery stepped up to provide a selection of their beer, kept cool at the brewery until needed.

The organisers would like to thank J D Cycles, the Wheatley Arms, Ilkley Brewery, Morrit Garden Services and Kathryn Tysoe, agent for Jamie Oliver Kitchenware, for generously supporting the event.

Anyone wanting to donate to or volunteer for Bradford Street Angels should contact Fiona Schneider at All Saints Parish Church, Ilkley.
