Wharfedale teenagers in police spotlight

Crime has stayed low in Wharfedale for the first month of the summer, according to new police figures.

The number of recorded crimes in Ilkley, Addingham, Burley-in-Wharfedale and Menston stayed low in June, with few burglaries in local communities.

Wharfedale and Craven Neighbourhood Policing Team has set local policing priorities for each community, helped by consultation at Police and Community Together (PACT) meetings in the valley.

There were just 29 crimes recorded in Ilkley in June, compared to statistics in the winter and spring, which frequently saw 40 or more crimes committed per month in town.

Police say there were only two house burglaries in Ilkley in June, and three burglaries of properties such as sheds, garages or commercial premises. Three assaults were recorded in Ilkley, two thefts from motor vehicles and three incidents of criminal damage.

The NPT has kept action against underage drinking as one of its two priorities for Ilkley, as well as focusing on anti-social behaviour by young people around the rugby club and golf club.

There were three crimes all month in Addingham, one a domestic-related assault, a theft from a motor vehicle and criminal damage. Speeding remains top policing priority in the village.

June saw eight crimes recorded in Burley. There were two thefts from motor vehicles and two reports of criminal damage, but no burglaries.

Priorities for Burley in July are regular Speedwatch patrols, and action to reduce anti-social behaviour and littering in the grounds of Burley Oaks Primary School on evenings and weekends.

Menston had 13 crimes in June, three of these house burglaries, as well as one other burglary. There was a theft from a motor vehicle and one report of criminal damage. No policing priority has been set for Menston, although police say they are aware of parking issues on Cleasby Road/Main Street junction.
