Ilkley pub seeks entries

Ale connoisseurs are being challenged by an Ilkley inn to design their own brew, and win a brewery master class.

The Cow and Calf, on Hangingstone Road, is inviting drinkers to dream up their perfect ale, give it a suitably inspiring name and provide some lip-smacking taste ideas, as part of the Vintage Inns Festival of Up and Coming Ales.

Those who come up with the best six new ale ideas nationwide will win a unique day out at one of six award-winning independent breweries, to learn the tricks of the trade – or even try their hand at brewing a top quality cask real ale themselves.

Landlord Alistair Johnson said: “Everyone seems to have an opinion on beer, so we’re really looking forward to the weird and wonderful ideas that our guests will come up with for the real ale of their dreams.”

The pub chain has produced a Winter Ale Festival guide with some tasting notes to get the ideas flowing.

Inspired ale inventors can post their entry on the new Vintage Inns Facebook page or by emailing their dream ale tasting notes to caskcomp@gmail.com.

The six winners will be judged from all the entries received via Facebook or email by 11.59pm on Monday, February 15. Winners will be notified via email by Wednesday, February 17.

Entrants have a maximum of 55 words to name their dream ale and produce its made up tasting notes.

Additionally, they should also state their preference for a brewery to visit in case they are one of the six winners.
