Ghyll Royd school hosted the first Wharfedale League Cross Country race as part of its open day last month.

Nearly 600 children took part representing 16 schools from across the region including Addingham, All Saints, Ashlands, Askwith, Ben Rhydding, Bradford Grammar, Burley Oaks, Burley and Woodhead, Froeb-elian, Gateways, Ghyll Royd, Guiseley Infants, Menston, Moorfield, Sacred Heart and Westville House.

Boys and girls of all ages put on their running shoes to demonstrate the strength of cross country running and competitive sport in the valley.

Well supported by their parents, families and their teachers, the children tried their very best and performed extremely well, certainly setting the stage for a very exciting winter season of cross country.

Headteacher Irene Connor said: “The day went extremely smoothly. It was wonderful having so many enthusiastic children taking part and so obviously enjoying the event.

“I would like to thank Shirley Wood of Ilkley Harriers and the staff and parents of Ghyll Royd for all their help marshaling and serving refreshments.
