INCOMMUNITIES gardeners have beaten the extremes of this year’s UK weather to create colourful wildflower planting schemes in Ilkley and beyond.

Thousands of wildlife flowers have appeared on verges and land at Backstone Way and Wyvil Crescent, next to Valley Drive, in Ilkley.

They are amongst over a dozen sites sown by the housing group’s estate services team to brighten up residential areas in Addingham, Bingley, Silsden, Shipley, Keighley and Ilkley.

The schemes have been masterminded by team supervisor Albert Sallu, but this year Albert and his team have faced a combination of cold and snowy weather in the planting season and a dry hot summer that’s affected their growth.

It left the team reseeding some of the sites and giving them plenty of watering.

Incommunities tenant, Glenda Eydmann from Fieldway, said: “Despite the weather it’s still nice to see the flowers blooming every day. They look lovely.”

Peter Catterick, Incommunities’ Head of Estate Services, said: “Every year Albert and his team work really hard to bring a splash of colour to our neighbourhoods. Although the hot weather has proved a real challenge, the team have succeeded again.

“As well as brightening up local areas for everyone and raising people’s spirits the planting is very effective in attracting bees and other pollinators.

“We hope the displays will continue well into September.”
