THE charity organisers of an annual party for some of the area’s oldest residents is inviting people to attend what has become a traditional event.

Locals who have passed their 90th milestone in age can enjoy a vintage afternoon tea accompanied by some great nostalgic entertainment.

The Ilkley and District Good Neighbours Over 90s Party, which will be held on Saturday, September 29 from 2pm to 4pm at the Clarke Foley Centre in Cunliffe Road, Ilkley, is open to the older residents of Ilkley, Burley-in-Wharfedale, Addingham and Menston.

“The closing date for applications is very soon so we’d love to hear from people who are interested in attending,” said charity trustee Adrian Heavisides.

“The party is as usual completely free and partners/escorts of those who are less mobile are also very welcome. We can in addition provide help with free transport on a first come, first served basis.”

This year’s guests will be serenaded by a medley of popular 1940’s songs played by pianist Myra Johnson, followed by a performance by Ilkley Moor Notes, and a saxophone session of vintage music by Steph Atkinson. The musical finale will include a sing-along with the popular Shirley Britton – who has been singing at the party for a remarkable 30 years – accompanied by her fellow singer Michael Loftus.

Helping out will be students from Ilkley Grammar School and Wharfedale Air Cadets who will serve the guests their afternoon tea.

“One of the great benefits of our party is that some of our older residents, who may not get out that often, have the opportunity to be in a friendly place, to hear some familiar songs, and have a chat as well as a lovely tea,” said Adrienne.

“We’re delighted as well to once again have the company at the party of H.M. Deputy Lieutenant for West Yorkshire, Mr David Pearson, and this year we will also be welcoming the Mayor of Ilkley, Steve Butler, and the MP for Keighley and Ilkley, John Grogan.”

Anyone aged 90 or over who would like an invitation is asked to contact Ilkley & District Good Neighbours at Riddings Hall, Riddings Road, Ilkley on 01943 603348, or email info@goodneighboursilkley.org.uk as soon as possible as booking forms need to be returned to the office by September 5.
