BENTHAM Community Primary School is celebrating after achieving the School Games Gold Mark Award.

The award, a government led award scheme, is run by the Youth Sport Trust and rewards schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and the wider community.

In order to win the award, over the last year, the school has increased its participation in sports festivals and competitions.

Its year six children have taken part in outdoor activities, gaining their John Muir awards. and residentials have been offered to years three to six.

There has also been increased out of school activities in basketball and football.

A spokesperson for the school said: "With an increased number of young people competing in local inter school competitions this year, we are extremely proud of our pupils for their dedication to all aspects of school sport, including those young volunteers, leaders and officials who made our competitions possible."

As part of the school's application for the award, it was asked to fulfil criteria in areas of participation, competition, workforce and clubs.

"We are pleased that the hard work of everyone at the school has been rewarded this year," added the spokesperson.
