PLANS are underway to help set up a Friends of Yeadon Cemetery group amid concerns over the misuse of the graveyard.

Leeds North West MP Alex Sobel hosted a public meeting last week to discuss the problem, following claims that plane spotters had turned the cemetery into a ‘mini-festival’ with picnics, football, and people urinating on graves.

At the meeting Mr Sobel described measures already undertaken to ensure that authorities were better prepared for unusual and popular aircraft. He also suggested that a residents group could be formed to ensure the security and longevity of the site.

He later said:” I am pleased that so many people came to the public meeting about Yeadon Cemetery. I was interested to hear from residents who were deeply concerned with inappropriate use of the cemetery as well as from aviation enthusiasts who put forward the case for a new viewing site. Solutions to this problem will not happen over-night but it’s a great result that all the agencies are coming together and are committed to ensure that the cemetery is protected for the community whilst, at the same time, improving the experience for those viewing aircraft.

“We are gathering up information of those who would be interested in taking part in a Friends of Yeadon Cemetery group and I would urge residents who would like to be involved to get in touch.”

Otley and Yeadon councillor Sandy Lay said: “Working together we’re hoping residents will be reassured that the council and its partners take their concerns seriously and are working to find solutions that are appropriate, proportional and funded.”

Mr Sobel will meet with officials from Leeds Bradford Airport in the coming weeks and will discuss the potential for a new viewing site.
