ADDINGHAM Environment Group is gearing up for its second Environment Day - although this year there will be a weekend of activities.

The theme is health and well being and events will take place on Saturday, June 30 and Sunday, July 1.

Addingham resident and environmental scientist Professor Rick Battarbee, who heads the Environment Group said: "We have a great weekend coming up. On Saturday morning from 10am to 1pm in the Memorial Hall come and find out what the Environment Group has been doing this year and what our plans are for the future.

"We’ll be looking at Addingham’s wildlife, how we can encourage sustainable housing, how we can manage our use of energy and what we are doing about pollution of different kinds.

"We’ll have some great guests for you to meet, crayfish, hedgehogs, killer shrimps and native owls as well as experts from Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, Yorkshire Dales Rivers Trust, the Woodland Trust, Leeds University School of Biology and Heritage Wildflowers, to name just a few. And of course there will be lots of activities for the whole family. The morning will be followed by a relaxing and fun afternoon at St Peter’s Church Fete in Church Field, from 2pm to 4.30pm.

"On Sunday afternoon from 2pm to 5pm there will be a guided environment walk. We will have two parties, both starting at the Memorial Hall but with the first leaving at 2pm and the second at 2.30pm. Bring the family and take a closer look at our interesting village first hand. Very easy walking with refreshments at the end: excellent for your health and well-being."

Linked to the weekend are two invitations: the first to sign up to Yorkshire Wildlife Trust’s initiative “30 days wild” which encourages everyone to do something however small for nature each day in June; the second is to take part in “The Environmental Feel Good Factor” which asks everyone to send in a photograph of something in nature that made you smile. Send in your photo via email to aeg@addingham.info and include the title, your name and age range - five and under, five to ten, 11-15, 16-20 and 20 plus. The photographs will be shown in the Memorial Hall on the morning of Saturday, June 30.

The Environment Group, set up by village's Civic Society in April 2016, is a 100-strong group of villagers committed to protecting, enhancing and, in some cases restoring the natural environment of the village and surrounding countryside for the enjoyment and well-being of both residents and visitors.
