RACING camels will be among the new attractions at this year’s Otley Show.

The 2018 event takes place on Saturday, May 19 and organisers Wharfedale Agricultural Society are promising a great day out for visitors of all ages.

Running at the Bridge End showground from 8am until 7.30pm, the show will, as always, centre around its traditional display classes.

The exhibition categories this year include sections for horses, cattle and sheep, poultry, rabbits and hamsters, and produce and handicrafts.

There will also be showjumping and a dog show, while favourite returning attractions will include a birds of prey display and The Sheep Show.

Show Secretary Janet Raw and her team have lined up a number of new events, too, for added entertainment.

They will include Joseph’s Amazing Racing Camels and a display by the Wharfedale Woofs Flyball Team.

Janet said: “Otley Show has grown to become one of the most important agricultural shows in the north for livestock and handicraft exhibitors to compete in, including a wide range of competitions for children.

“It is a great day out for all the family with many attractions and events planned throughout the day.

“And yes this year, if you can imagine it, we are having camels at Otley Show - whatever next?

“We have also invited a gentleman from Hereford who is bringing a vintage dairy wagon to show how cows were milked in days gone by, plus loads of memorabilia.

“Model Boats from Yeadon Tarn have been invited to give a display at the top of the lake, too, while the local dog flyball team, Wharfedale Woofs, will be performing throughout the morning before the Tug o’ War.

“We have good display entries in all sections and the number in Horses are up, predominantly in the coloured classes and the new Veteran classes.

“The Poultry Show is back this year and the marquee will be shared with rabbits, hamsters, pigeons and eggs.

“And we have the return of Ben Potter with his Birds of Prey - a very popular attraction which draws huge crowd to the ring side.”

Other events lined up for the day include stone carving, dry stone walling and wool spinning demonstrations, donkey rides, a farrier competition and a display of vintage cars and tractors.

Live music will be provided by Otley Brass Band and, in the Music Marquee, a variety of acts.

Children’s entertainment, meanwhile, will include giant inflatables, games and Punch and Judy shows and there will be ferret racing courtesy of Otley Ferret Rescue.

Tickets cost £9 for adults, £6 for concessions, or £3 for children, with family tickets available priced £22. (There is also a £2 parking fee payable as vehicles arrive at the showground).

A £1 discount will be applied to all tickets that are bought in advance.
