THE delightful Swedish comedy A Man Called Ove is Ilkley Film Society’s next screening on Sunday, April 29 (8pm, Ilkley Playhouse).

Ove, a kind of Swedish Victor Meldrew, is a grumpy old widower whose sole reason for living seems to be to protest about his neighbours’ behaviour.

He was deposed as chairman of the residents’ association years earlier but still acts as if he were in charge of the community.

When his mailbox is accidentally demolished by a couple moving in across the street, and the wife – an Iranian – tries to make amends Ove begins to see there might be a better way out of his depression than his repeated and ham-fisted suicide attempts.

A Man Called Ove was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar, but lost to The Salesman, shown earlier in the Film Society’s season.

The film is adapted from Fredrik Backman’s novel, whose English translation stayed 42 weeks on the New York Times’ best-seller list.

Non-members are welcome as guests (£4) but their admission cannot be guaranteed unless they reserve tickets in advance by phoning Dave Howell on 01943 430097.
