BURLEY-in-Wharfdale Skyrac runners David Stoneman and Rebecca César de Sá were among the 34 successful Guinness World Record attempts at Sunday's London Marathon.

Ninety records were attempted at the hottest London marathon on record. There were people dressed up as Star Wars characters, ice-creams, in wedding dresses, wearing stilts, in full body armour and even as Where's Wally.

"I was really nervous before the race due to the heat and the fact that there were two other female lifeguards at the adjudication tent in the morning," said Rebecca.

"After the group photo I shook their hands and we wished each other good luck. For the whole race I had no idea at all of who was in front of who."

Dave was equally concerned about the heat in his night cap, as removing it would have disqualified him. "The crowds were amazing and really got us through the 26.2 miles," he said. "Crossing the line and being greeted by the Guinness World Record adjudicator was an incredible feeling, knowing that I had run all that way, in such heat and in fancy dress to raise money for charity."

Guinness Word Records tweeted: 'Congratulations to West Yorkshire resident David Stoneman, who has just achieved the fastest marathon dressed in pyjamas (male). Looking like he’d run straight out of bed!'

Dave was the fifth successful Guinness World Record finisher in 3:07:09 and Rebecca finished 12th out of the 34 records broken (the second female) in 3:31:06. Both impressive times considering the tough conditions for racing, especially in fancy dress outfits.

"We have each raised over £1,000 for charity and that was what the attempts were in aid of, the fact that we are both now Guinness World Record holders is an added bonus!," added Rebecca.

Al Nash, of Addingham a forester with the Woodland Trust, donned a leafy costume in an attempt the enter the record books as the fastest marathon running tree.

He missed out on the record but did manage to raise money and awareness for the Woodland Trust, his photograph even appearing in three national newspapers on Monday.
