ILKLEY will be advertised to the world in eight foot high letters as it takes prominence in this year's Tour de Yorkshire.

The town's iconic Cow and Calf rocks will be the backdrop for Tour's first ever summit finish. And with the eyes of the world on the event a plan has been put forward to spell out the name Ilkley in massive letters.

The scheme has won the support of Ilkley Parish Council's Community Fund Committee, whose members have approved spending £910 on the project.

Councillors have also agreed to provide more than £3500 for a Speed Indicator Device to slow down traffic, following a number of collisions on Bolling Road and around Ilkley over the past six months. The council is also giving £900 to repair a wall damaged in an accident near Ben Rhydding Bridge.

Among other funding approved by councillors is £5000 to repair the alleyway at W H Smith, as well as £2610 on flowerbeds and £5100 on road safety projects.

Members of the Awards and Projects Committee agreed £180 for a disabled toilet at Ben Rhydding Community Fete and £2,000 to Ilkley and District Arts Federation.
