THE powerful French-Polish film The Innocents is Ilkley Film Society’s next screening on Sunday, March 18 at 8pm at Ilkley Playhouse.
In 1945 a French Red Cross doctor in Poland is visited by a nun who pleads with her to come to her convent where another nun is about to give birth.
The doctor finds to her amazement that many of the other nuns are also pregnant after being raped by Soviet soldiers advancing towards Germany.
The Mother Superior’s main concern seems to be to keep the situation a secret, and is reluctant to accept help from outside – but she has a terrible secret of her own, and what is to happen to the babies?
Unlike her earlier film Coco Before Chanel, director Anne Fontaine’s film has had few screenings in British cinemas and has not even been released on DVD in the UK, so this is a rare opportunity to see a beautifully-crafted and haunting film.
Non-members are welcome as guests (£4) but their admission cannot be guaranteed unless they reserve tickets in advance by phoning Dave Howell on 01943 430097.
