PARLIAMENT must vote on whether money spent on overseas aid should instead be given to the NHS, claims a district MP.

Philip Davies, whose Shipley constituency includes Burley and Menston, was speaking in the Commons following a recent opinion poll.

"The poll showed that 84 per cent of people want money diverted from the overseas aid budget to the NHS," he said.

"Can we have a debate and vote on this issue so we can see how out of touch this House is once again with public opinion at large?"

Mr Davies has made repeated calls for some of the overseas aid funding to instead go to causes at home, including the NHS and adult social care.

But Commons leader Andrea Leadsom said it was important to strike a balance.

She said International Development Secretary, Penny Mordaunt, was determined the generosity of the British people should "be put to best use".

"It is very important to focus on the the UK's generosity with aid in crisis to support the rights of women and girls and deal with some of the very poorest in the world," added Mrs Leadsom.

"It's the right balance that we should give to those that are far worse off than we are as well as increasing funding for our vital NHS."
