BURLEY Bowls Club in Grange Park has been the victim of three acts of crass vandalism during the last week.

Mindless vandals have poured diesel and petrol onto the green on three separate occasions which will result in areas of the grass being killed off.

Club secretary Brian Wheeler told the Gazette that the green had been subject to significant work after the season had just finished. "We have considerable resources from our limited funds to ensure that next season we had a much improved green," he said. "Unfortunately the green does suffer from occasional damage because of its open access. The village benefits from having the bowls green as a feature not enclosed by fencing or rails but it has made members reconsider the desirability of enclosing the green.

"We welcome everyone to play bowls but we must have an acceptable surface to play on. Those that applied fuel to the green know that it will seriously damage the green and we are starting to think we are being targeted for some reason.

"It is also very sad to report that a member of our bowls committee had his car vandalised by repeated scratches to both sides of his car also last week – it will cost £3,000 to repair."

The criminal damage has been reported to West Yorkshire Police.
