ABBEYFIELD residents were visited by Ben Rhydding Cubs who entertained them by chatting and playing a selection of board games.

A week earlier the cubs all became dementia friends after listening to a talk given by Sylvia Bergin, a member of Dementia Friendly Ilkley Action.

The cubs listened attentively and afterwards said they felt they understood more about dementia and the importance of living well with the disease, as well as understanding that there is more to a person who has dementia than their condition. This made their visit enjoyable for all, as the cubs listened to the residents tell stories from their earlier lives which were fascinating. A wonderful example of young people engaging with elderly people in a positive and enjoyable manner for everyone.

Public dementia friends information sessions are still available at The Clarke Foley centre, Ilkley. The next dates are November 16 at 5.45pm, December 16 at 11 30am and January 6, 2018 at 10 30am. Email dementiafriendlyilkley@gmail.com to reserve a place or contact The Clarke Foley Centre.
