ADDINGHAM Allotments and Gardens Association Annual Show took place on Saturday, August 12.

Retiring Show secretary Ramon Porter said: "The sun shone and another bright light was surely shining down on the village that day. John Bottomley our recently deceased larger than life character and stalwart of the Society and all things horticultural in the village must take some credit for an amazing 53 per cent increase to almost 600 entries for the show this year.

"The Memorial Hall was absolutely overflowing with a huge array of exhibits and a healthy increase in visitor numbers. One of the judges commented that he was very impressed with both the quantity and the high standard of the exhibits.

It is very rewarding to finish on such a high note but my lasting memory will be the friendship of John Bottomley."

President Bill Preston and Chairman Douglas McCowan both paid tribute to John for his huge contribution over many years to the Society and appealed for additional committee members to maintain the current high standard of Society events. Thanks were given to all, on and off the committee, who had worked very hard to make the day a success.

The judges were: Vegetables Peter Bradshaw, Flowers Stephen Ryan, Baking Daphne Baxter, Jams & Preserves Jill Holme, Floral Art Stephanie Edwards, Handicrafts Margaret Creek, Children's Elaine Ackroyd and Dawn Emsley, Photographs Dr John Fontana and Allotments John Bottomley.

The prizes were presented by Councillor Peter Hindle and Addingham Gala Queen Evelyn Truluck.
