A WASHBURN and Mid Wharfe Benefice United Service was held at All Saints Church, Weston on Sunday, July 30.
The church and priest in Weston were referred to in the Domesday Book of 1086 and the present building, which is now grade I listed, dates from the 11th century. It contains box pews from the 18th century and an unusual three-tier pulpit. There is also some early 14th century stained glass. It has a Squire’s Parlour with a separate entrance door.
The service was conducted by Rev Graham Shield and Rev Canon Derek Walmsley who was visiting to explain his role as Diocesan Director of Ordinands and Vocations for Leeds.
The Washburn Valley Choir, conducted by Alistair Wood of Leathley, supported the service and sang O Taste and See by Vaughan Williams, O Come Ye Servants Of The Lord by Christopher Tye and O Lord Give Thy Holy Spirit by Thomas Tallis.
One member of the congregation said: "I have never visited this church before, it is certainly a fascinating, historic, hidden gem and great to see it full of people."
