LOCAL residents have enjoyed an annual excursion into the Yorkshire Dales courtesy of Ilkley and District Good Neighbours.

The summer sunshine was shining when the group recently enjoyed two scenic drives into the Yorkshire Dales. They took place in May and July and a total of 45 very appreciative participants had the opportunity to enjoy an afternoon drive, followed by a superb afternoon tea at Bolton Abbey Cavendish Pavilion Cafe. As usual the afternoon tea was delicious and afterwards some of the guests took the opportunity to visit the gift shop to make a few purchases.

The excursion scheme, which is free for guests, and was started eight years ago has proved to be immensely popular with older residents who love the countryside but find that they can no longer access it on their own. The aim of these excursions is simply to enable older residents the opportunity to get out of their homes and to interact with other people. Funding of the excursions is provided by personal donations and grants from various organisations.

“Everyone really enjoyed themselves,” said excursion organiser Anita Dunford. “I think it’s so important that our elderly residents are able to access the Yorkshire countryside with many of our guests recalling times they had spent with their families enjoying days walking or picnicking in the Dales."

The buses used are supplied by Community Transport, and Good Neighbours would like to thank volunteer drivers John Bray and Peter Kierman for arranging the scenic route into the Dales and to volunteers Joan Sumner, Judy Hutton, Adrienne Heavisides, Josephine Loughran and Yvonne Kierman for their help in assisting with the excursions.

Although Ilkley Good Neighbours does have some funding from organisations and individuals it relies on continual financial support and also much-needed input from volunteers. “If anyone would like to be considered for future trips – or offer to help us in any way - please telephone the office on 01943 603348 or email info@goodneighbours.ilkley.org" added Anita.

Ilkley Good Neighbours operate various schemes to support independent living within the community, including Befriending, Shop Assist, Excursions, Over 90’s Party and Christmas Parcels Scheme.
