BOSSES of a village church have scotched rumours that it is being sold.

A 'for sale' sign at the bottom of the drive at St Peter's Methodist Church, Cross Hills, sparked fears amongst some that the building was being marketed.

But this week, church leaders spoke out to reassure the community that the rumours are untrue.

They say the church hall is up for sale, not the church itself.

"The sign refers to the sale of the church hall only," said a spokesman.

"The church is being refurbished to update the facilities for worship and for all those who use the building, both now and in the future.

"We hope it will remain a centre for the community of Cross Hills."

The refurbishment includes installation of a lower ceiling and new double glazing, a kitchen, coffee bar and storage areas.

Wooden flooring will replace carpet tiles and the worship area is being rearranged.

All services and other activities are currently taking place in the hall, and will transfer back to the church once work is complete.
