BRADFORD Council is to install signs on the River Wharfe in Ilkley to warn of the dangers of swimming.

The move comes after an incident, reported in the Gazette last week, when a young teenager got into difficulties and had to be rescued from the water.

Ian Wood, Principal Manager for Parks and Green Spaces, said: “We are looking to install some signs along the River Wharfe in Ilkley to warn of the dangers of swimming in the river and are currently identifying the best spots to install them.

“We have similar signs at some reservoirs and dams around the district highlighting the dangers of swimming in deep and cold water. We are looking to install the informative signs as soon as possible.”

Mother-of-two Rachel Wilkinson, of Ilkley, who witnessed the latest distressing incident said she didn't feel this response went far enough.

She said: "All the local schools will be finished on Friday so many more youngsters and teens will be unaccompanied by parents and quite likely to go down towards the river to have fun and pass time.

"The Parish Council gave an immediate response and have expressed an intention to act as soon as possible.

"It's not just about swimming in cold or deep water. I think the whirlpool current needs outlining and personally feel a buoyancy aid is also required."
