A CAR fire overnight on Monday destroyed not only the vehicle - a VW Polo - but also the information board at the entrance to Darwin Gardens Millennium Green in Ilkley.

Police were made aware on Tuesday morning and attended the scene to recover the vehicle.

A spokesman for Ilkley Parish Council said: "The Parish Council is arranging for the area to be cleaned as soon as possible and the notice board will be removed by the end of the week and replaced as soon as possible."

Darwin Gardens Millennium Green was established in 2000 as a millennium project. It is a registered charity, managed by a trust and operated by volunteer trustees with assistance from a contractor and Bradford Council.

It occupies a six-acre site on the edge of the town, formerly a municipal park, and borders Ilkley Moor. It is named after Charles Darwin, who came to stay at Wells House, an Ilkley spa hotel, in 1859 after sending his famous book On The Origin of Species to the printers.
