THE SPEED limit on the main road through Bramhope looks set to stay at 40mph.

Leeds City Council had been considering requests to introduce a 30mph limit on part of the A660 Leeds Road.

In the five years from 2012 there have been nine 'slight' accidents and one serious incident on the stretch between the Britannia Hotel and Kings Road.

Highways officers have concluded, however that speed was not 'a direct or indirect causation factor in any of the incidents', and so cannot back the call for a lower limit.

They are, though exploring ways of improving safety on the bend in the road beside its junction with Church Hill - the scene of several damage-only scrapes this year.

A position statement issued to councillors says: "The council is aware of the number of incidents that have taken place on the bend by Church Hill in the March to June, 2017 period.

"Work to identify the causation of these incidents is ongoing with remedial measures being proposed in the summer period."

Bramhope and Carlton Parish Council has welcomed that news - and says the new measures will complement a number of other recent road safety works.

Those have included:

*Making much of Bramhope village a 20mph zone, with speed bumps on Breary Lane

*The installation of a speed bump at The Cross junction

*The introduction of yellow lines to restrict parking, and therefore help driver visibility, on Church Hill and Breary Lane.

A SID (Speed Indicator Device) will also soon be installed on Kings Road with the parish council committed to introducing another on Moor Road.

Councillor John Howard said: "In recent months there have been a series of accidents on the bend in the A660 opposite St Giles Church.

"This was a major item of discussion at the parish council meeting on June 28, the need for action by Leeds being underlined by yet another accident that very afternoon where a car left the road and demolished part of the boundary wall in front of the church, close to the bus stop.

"Urgent representations were made to Highways through city and parish Councillor Billy Flynn.

"The parish council is pleased to see that Highways have recognised this is an accident black spot that needs urgent action.

"Temporary signs have been erected at the bend in both directions, warning motorists that there is a skid risk.

"The parish council will continue to monitor the situation."

The parish council is also hoping for measures to improve safety at the junction of Occupation Lane and Old Lane where there have been a string of accidents.
