THE Romans will be marching into Skipton this weekend as part of the national Festival of Archaeology.

They will be taking part in a special free 'hands on history' event being put on at Craven Museum, in the town hall.

Visitors will be be given the chance to examine close up key Roman items found in Craven and to find out what life was like in a Roman Fort like the one discovered at Elslack.

Children's activities will include an excavation area, mosaic making, and Roman toga wearing.

Rachel Terry, Craven District Council's museum and collections officer, said: “This promises to be a fantastic event for families and anyone else interested in the Roman period of history. Visitors can look at and handle artefacts from the museum's Roman collection including mosaics, Roman glass and our own 'mysterious object', and there will be a special children's archaeology area."

Activities will take place on both Saturday and Sunday, between 10am and 4pm, but the Roman soldiers will be in town on Sunday only, when there will be children's size Roman armour to try on.
