FORMER Conservative MP for Ilkley, Kris Hopkins has marked the start of construction of a retirement accommodation in Ilkley.

Mr Hopkins joined development manager Graeme Kynman, along with Nicolas Hawkes, step son of author J B Priestley, to perform a groundbreaking ceremony to officially recognise the start of building work at Priestley Court, McCarthy and Stone’s new Retirement Living scheme, part of an exclusive dual retirement development in Ilkley called Scholar’s Place.

Set to be the largest McCarthy and Stone development of its kind in the region, the apartments on Railway Road have already been attracting a high level of interest in the area.

Mr Hopkins said: “It was a pleasure to visit the site of McCarthy and Stone’s planned new developments in Ilkley, and to mark the start of construction at Priestley Court. Developments like this are a great asset to the town, as they provide the perfect solution for people who are looking to downsize but don’t want to compromise on style, or for those who require some additional support. The end result is a more fluid housing chain in and around Ilkley, where it frees up housing stock for families and first time buyers also wanting to move, but who enjoy and want to stay in the local area.”

Liz Green, regional sales and marketing director McCarthy and Stone North East, added: “We are delighted that Mr Hopkins was able to take the time to visit Scholar’s Place, and take a look at the plans for some of the fantastic apartments that will be on offer here. Having Nicolas there was also a real honour, and it was great to be able to pay tribute to such a prolific author who had such close connections to Ilkley.

“McCarthy and Stone is committed to designing flexible homes which allow people to make the most of their retirement years, and live as independently as possible with the benefit of having a range of amenities right on their doorstep.”

Once complete, the Priestley Court development will compromise of 44 one and two bedroom retirement apartments for the over 60s. Features will include a homeowners’ lounge, ideal for socialising with friends, landscaped gardens in which to relax, plus a roof terrace. Should homeowners have friends or relatives to visit, a guest suite can be provided.

There will also be a further 58 one and two bedroom apartments as part of its Chesterton Court development, which will be designed for the over 70s, and those who require some added support. A bistro style restaurant will also provide freshly prepared meals daily if homeowners don’t wish to cook in their apartments; and 24 hour emergency call points will be in place for added peace of mind for both homeowners and their families.
