CAMPAIGNERS will abseil down the Cow and Calf at Ilkley this weekend to help fund the fight against a planned incinerator.

General election candidates and members of the public are being invited to take part in the sponsored abseil to help pay for a legal challenge against the Marley scheme.

Last week Aire Valley Against Incineration applied for a judicial review against Bradford council’s decision to approve the planning application.

Jane Stone, who founded the campaign, said: “We have been given expert legal advice that we have a very strong case and if successful, this will overturn the planning application. The judicial review process is very expensive and it is only with the generous help of the public that we have been able to do this. AVAI is committed to keep fighting to stop the incinerator and will be continuing to reach out to the community for donations with fundraising activities in the coming months”.

Keighley and Ilkley Green Party candidate and anti-incinerator campaigner Ros Brown and Liberal Democrat candidate Matt Walker are both taking part in the abseil at 2.30pm on Sunday.

Ms Brown said: “The Aire Valley Against Incineration committee and associated members have worked so hard for so long to reach this point in their attempts to stop the incinerator being built. All of the general election candidates and members of the public are invited to take up the Cow and Calf abseiling challenge. Alternatively people can keep their feet on the ground and sponsor Matt and I via AVAI’s Just Giving page https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/airevalleyagainstincineration.”

The event takes place between 10.30am and 4pm and costs £10 to register. Contact Simon Shimbles using airevalleyabseil@gmail.com for further details.
