EARLY blue skies and bumper crowds greeted the 208th Otley Show.

The fine morning weather ensured thousands headed to the show field on Saturday, May 20 to enjoy the variety of countryside attractions on offer.

Among the highlights this year was a death-defying motorcycle stunt show in the main ring that had the crowd audibly gasping in amazement.

The Squibb Freestyle stunt team's riders launched themselves off of ramps high into the air, where they were framed dramatically against the backdrop of Otley Chevin as they performed tricks.

The more traditional events, including the livestock, produce and handicrafts entries and dry stone walling, spinning and weaving demonstrations, proved popular too.

As did Ben Potter's Birds of Prey display, which saw a vulture and eagle with huge wingspans circling majestically over the show field.

The weather did turn in the early afternoon, when the skies clouded over and some persistent rain began, but most visitors simply popped up their umbrellas or dashed into the nearest marquee, determined not to let it drive them away.

Show Secretary Janet Raw, speaking on the day, said: "It was really buzzing in the morning and we were very fortunate with the early weather, it has helped bring people to the show so we're very grateful.

"It's been a great day - we had record entries in the Sheep with lots of new breeds.

"We also had lots of young shepherds and shepherdesses and it was the same in the Cattle section with lots of young calf handlers which is a always a good sign, to get some fresh blood in."

Other hits on the day included the Tug of War contest, where male and female teams - most of whose members were wearing ski boots for added grip - were cheered on as they battled for supremacy.

Otley Sailing Club were once again, as part of the RYA Push the Boat Out scheme, offering visitors the chance to take a boat out on the lake - and those who did were rewarded with some fast speeds thanks to a strong breeze.

Elsewhere the Horse classes, ranging from Shires and a new Veteran section to dressage and showjumping, were well supported and Warren Calitz's Sheep Show - complete with a shearing demonstration - drew big crowds.

Further attractions included the farriers competition, a dog show, ferret racing, Otley Chamber of Trade's Shop Local and Otley Prospers marquee and, for younger visitors, bungee swings, giant inflatables and a zipwire.

Live music was provided throughout the day by various traditional artists in the Folk marquee, and by Otley Brass Band - who played everything from classical pieces to the James Bond Theme.

Former Otley Town Mayor Councillor Ian Jackson (Lib Dem, Ashfield), after finishing his morning stint selling admission tickets on the gate, was among those who enjoyed the day.

He said: "It's lived up to its very high standards again, as usual, and brought in lots of lovely visitors."
