THE Ilkley Bandstand programme for this season from May to September is now on the notice board at the bandstand.

Thirty-six bands will be playing at weekends throughout the season plus various other events.

Tony Gilroy, of the bandstand management committee, said: "We are almost fully booked but there are some Saturday morning slots available for any band, group or choir to take up. Contact details are on the notice board.

"We would very much welcome sponsors either for particular bands or for the bandstand itself. As we are not owned or funded by the Council we have to raise money to pay for the cost of running the bandstand and any donations are always very welcome. We are very grateful to Yorkshire Dales Ice Cream and Ilkley Round Table for their generous annual donations but costs of insurance, licences, maintenance, power, gardening etc continue to rise."

The bandstand was built as a millennium project with money raised by Ilkley Rotary Club and Ilkley Wharfedale Rotary Club. The land was made available thanks to the generosity of Abbeyfield. A management committee was formed comprising of representatives of various local organisations to run the bandstand site which is now a much loved and used facility for residents and visitors alike. It is run entirely by volunteers who generously give their time and energy to ensure the enjoyment of all.

Tony added: "However, like so many organisations we do need some more volunteers who would be prepared to join our rota of bandstand openers. This involves opening up power points, switching on lights and getting chairs out for the bands prior to the band playing and then closing down at the end of the performance. Generally this will be on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon throughout the season. Our management committee would welcome anyone who would like to get more actively involved in the operation of the bandstand and join the committee."
