VAST crowds gathered to celebrate the coronation of George V more than a century ago.

The extent of the celebrations can be seen in this photograph taken at Towngate, Guiseley, on June 22, 1911. The picture is from the archives of Aireborough Historical Society.

Archivist Carlo Harrison said: "On the left you can see the Cross Inn which was a beer house along side the blacksmith's forge which was a popular place for men to meet for a 'cal' (chat), you can see people on top of the blacksmiths roof. This is the area where the Frank Parkinson's Homes now stand.

The street lamp seen at the front of the photograph is mounted on the stump of the old cross."

In the second photograph Josie Bamford attracted attention at Ilkley Carnival with her magnificent Venetian mask. The undated picture is from the archives of the Ilkley Gazette.
