SIGHT airedale is celebrating a milestone.

The charity – formerly Keighley and District Association for the Blind – is 110 years old.

And to mark the anniversary, a special, tactile map of the organisation's Scott Street sight centre has been produced.

It provides a guide to the many services and facilities housed in the two-storey building.

The map, produced by TacMap, will be unveiled at an event on May 9.

Several charitable trusts helped fund the initiative, which cost just under £5,000.

Kevin Baldwin, the charity's chief executive, said he was delighted with the venture.

"I thought 110 years was worth celebrating," he said.

"I'd seen a tactile map at a blind centre in Sheffield and was very impressed with it.

"We started work on the project over 12 months ago and I've really enjoyed it.

"Support has been provided by four trusts and we're extremely grateful for that."

Mr Baldwin hopes the map, which will be located in the sight centre, will raise awareness of provision at the premises.

"There is a meeting room available for hire – used by about 20 organisations – and many other services but a lot of people are unaware of what goes on," he added.

"The map will hopefully provide a talking point and help spread the word."

Provision includes a Daily Living shop, featuring more than 150 items designed to make life easier for people with sight impairment. Products range from talking clocks and watches to special kitchen utensils and big-button phones. Visits to the shop are by appointment only.

There is a braille, audio and large print transcription service and an audio book library.

An assessment service gives people the chance to try different types of magnifier.

Information is available on a range of technology including computers, tablets, e-readers and mobile phones.

People can also learn braille and help is on hand to complete benefits claims forms.

The charity supports over 460 sight-impaired people across a wide area, including Craven, the Yorkshire Dales and Wharfedale.

It has social centres in Keighley, Bingley and Silsden.
