A CHAMPION dog breeder has taken over ownership of Otley's oldest pet shop.

David Crowther, who was born in the town and raised in Ilkley, has been a customer of Petwise for more than 15 years - and for the past five an employee, too.

A breeder of Champion Weimaraners and Gordon Setters, Mr Crowther has received a number of top accolades in the show ring including, on three occasions, a Best of Breed award at Crufts.

He has described taking over Petwise - set up by Brian and Andrew Parry in 1989, and from 2015 taken on by Tony and Karen Burton - as a 'dream come true'.

The 33 year old said: "Petwise is so well regarded and supported locally.

"I’m delighted to be taking it on to continue its standing within Otley’s business community."

The Orchard Gate based shop's official opening under Mr Crowther's ownership will take place this Saturday, April 1 and ties in with the start of National Pet Month (NPM).

The annual campaign runs from April 1 to May 1 and promotes responsible pet ownership while raising funds for animal charities.

Petwise will mark the month by holding a pet of the month photograph competition, special offers in store, and a Facebook competition to win pet food for charity.

National Pet Month Chairman Michael Bellingham said: "We’re delighted Petwise Otley is taking part in NPM to celebrate our relationship with our pets.

"Pets give so much to us - in return we need to look after them responsibly to keep them healthy and happy."

Mr Crowther, who plans to hold other themed days and charity events throughout the year, added: "Pets are more than just animals.

"They are valued members of the family and as such deserve the best of everything, which we can provide - along with expert advice and help."
