LOCAL primary schools are being given a sporting chance thanks to the School Sports Partnership. The Partnership, which has been running since 2011, has helped thousands of students in the West Yorkshire area achieve sporting success and increased their confidence as young athletes. Primary schools in Ilkley and the surrounding areas benefit from the Partnership which is co-organised by representatives from Ilkley Grammar School.

One school that has benefitted is Ghyll Royd School in Burley-in-Wharfedale who won the Europa League Cup in the Astro Football League tournament in March, beating three other local primaries to the top spot. The coming together of different schools in the local area creates a friendly, competitive buzz where the main aim is to have fun.

Head Teacher at Ghyll Royd School David Martin said: “What a fantastic achievement for our pupils, adding to a number of trophies and commendations won through the School Sports Partnership. It is a fantastic scheme that wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of organiser Peter Blackwell, the representatives from Ilkley Grammar School who referee the fixtures, and the hospitality from staff at sports grounds such as Ben Rhydding Sports Club.”

Ilkley Grammar School representatives offer a variety of opportunities to schools including cricket, swimming, rounders, basketball and athletics.
