AN MP has blasted proposals to "rip up" his constituency.

Philip Davies, whose Shipley seat includes Burley and Menston, said Labour recommendations to the Boundary Commission would split the district and separate neighbouring towns.

"These proposals are ridiculous," he said.

"It proves the Labour Party neither understands nor cares about the communities in my constituency.

"It is nonsensical splitting Bingley from Bingley Rural and also splitting Shipley from Baildon, which clearly belong together."

The Labour proposals would effectively see Keighley Central, Keighley East, Keighley West, Worth Valley, Bingley Rural, Shipley and Windhill and Wrose as one constituency of Keighley and Shipley.

Baildon, Bingley, Wharfedale, Ilkley, Craven and Guiseley and Rawdon would make up an Airedale and Wharfedale constituency.

Under the official proposals published last month by the Boundary Commission, Shipley would lose Wharfedale to Keighley but gain Guiseley and Rawdon from Pudsey.

Public consultation runs until December 5.

Ilkley MP Kris Hopkins urges people to give their views.

"I would encourage residents – regardless of any political allegiances they might have – to make a contribution to this," he said.

"The current Keighley parliamentary constituency is well defined but lower on numbers in comparison with some other seats.

"The Wharfedale ward is a natural fit and the proposal to add it to Keighley therefore makes complete sense. It also allows the remainder of the constituency to stay together, which I very much welcome.

"The new boundaries have my support and I see no logical reason for them to change."
